Booch Joins CBAN in The Fight Against GMOs

March 19, 2018 / Giving Back /

Food sovereignty. Environmental justice. Healthy livelihoods.

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) is a collaboration of 16 groups across Canada that “research, monitor and raise awareness about issues relating to genetic engineering in food and farming.”

Their mission:

“To promote food sovereignty and democratic decision-making on science and technology issues in order to protect the integrity of the environment, health, food, and the livelihoods of people in Canada and around the world by facilitating, informing, and organizing civil society action, researching, and providing information to government for policy development.”

The Truth About Genetic Engineering

Genetic Engineering (GE), also commonly referred to as Genetic Modification (GM), both describe recombinant DNA technology (rDNA).

GE and GM practices manipulate organisms by adding DNA through biotechnology, thereby altering the genome. Intervening at the molecular level, through GM and GE, directly changes the genetic makeup of the organism.

CBAN’s Battles

CBAN is taking a stand on the lack of food labelling through the Private Members Bill C-291, which introduces mandatory labeling of GM foods. Even though 80% of Canadians want to see these labels, there is currently no mandatory labelling of GM foods. Take action by sending an email to your parliamentary representative. Click here to Take Action!

Corporate conglomeration is taking over the seed industry. Six major players essentially control the market for engineered crops. This concentration of power means higher prices for consumers, narrower diversity both in crops and in farmers’ choices, and a standstill in innovation. Take action against mega-mergers by submitting your comments to Canada’s Competition Bureau. Read more.

There are various initiatives that CBAN currently supports that you can become involved with as well.

Booch’s Support of CBAN

CBAN raises awareness about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and helps to educate consumers on how to choose non-GM products effectively—and Booch is on board!

Shannon Kamins, Founder of Booch Organic Kombucha, speaks to how CBAN is invoking change—a type of change that is extremely important for our society:

“We all know that big change can happen at the grassroots level, but without policy action from the top, there will never be concrete policy change,” she says, “and so for an organization to advocate for this, we are able to fight the issue from both levels of change; top down and bottom up.”

Booch is involved with CBAN through direct donations, moral support, handing out pamphlets, and sharing their marketing materials, as well as advocating for organic and non-GM products.

Booch is 100% FREE of GMOs

When asked why it is important for Booch products to be free of GMOs, Shannon replied:

“It is absolutely vital that Booch only chooses organic ingredients to flavour our craft brew with. I can’t imagine fermenting pesticide-laden or genetically-modified products in our brew, because at the very heart of it all, Booch cares about digestive and gut health. We know how detrimental GM materials can be on your gut. Almost all GM products are sprayed with pesticides that are known to eat away at the digestive tracts of insects… which allows us to raise the question; what will happen to our digestive tract if we consume these ingredients as well? There have been numerous scientific experiments confirming the negative health impacts associated with consumption of GM foods.”

Booch ensures that GMOs are avoided at all costs by working with certified organic, wild-crafted, or permaculturally-grown ingredients. There is never a point in time where an exception can be made to use an ingredient that is genetically modified or not grown organically.

Connecting with local organic farmers allows me to source ingredients close to home, as well as visit the farm and speak directly with the farmer, which allows me to choose all of the ingredients I use in the brew,” says Shannon, “I am thorough and careful and know that only the absolutely best ingredients are sourced.”

Promote health. Connect community. Celebrate gratitude. At Booch Organic Kombucha, we believe that healthy beverages are the basis for vibrant living. We are committed to food security, run a socially responsible business, and love nourishing our neighbours. We use the ancient elixir of yesteryear to heal gut disturbances, one bottle at a time.
